9:18 Then I again fell down before the Lord for forty days and nights; I ate and drank nothing because of all the sin you had committed, doing such evil before the Lord as to enrage him.

Theological Justification of the Conquest

9:1 Listen, Israel: Today you are about to cross the Jordan so you can dispossess the nations there, people greater and stronger than you who live in large cities with extremely high fortifications. ¹ 

Deuteronomy 13:8-9

13:8 You must not give in to him or even listen to him; do not feel sympathy for him or spare him or cover up for him. 13:9 Instead, you must kill him without fail! ²  Your own hand must be the first to strike him, ³  and then the hands of the whole community.

Deuteronomy 13:2

13:2 and the sign or wonder should come to pass concerning what he said to you, namely, “Let us follow other gods” – gods whom you have not previously known – “and let us serve them.”

Deuteronomy 6:22

6:22 And he ⁴  brought signs and great, devastating wonders on Egypt, on Pharaoh, and on his whole family ⁵  before our very eyes.

[9:1]  ¹ tn Heb “fortified to the heavens” (so NRSV); NLT “cities with walls that reach to the sky.” This is hyperbole.

[13:9]  ² tn The Hebrew text uses the infinitive absolute for emphasis, which the translation indicates with the words “without fail” (cf. NIV “you must certainly put him to death”).

[13:9]  ³ tn Heb “to put him to death,” but this is misleading in English for such an action would leave nothing for the others to do.

[6:22]  ⁴ tn Heb “the Lord.” See note on the word “his” in v. 17.

[6:22]  ⁵ tn Heb “house,” referring to the entire household.
